A boy enters a glowing cave in an autumn forest, watched by a moss-covered guardian.

Roots Beneath Dreams

7 minutes

Inside the heart of a great rolling forest, where orange and red leaves swirled in the cool autumn air, there stood a cave hidden beneath a blanket of moss and brambles. Not many knew of this cave, for it was tucked behind a curtain of dangling willow vines, and the ground before it was cushioned by crunchy leaf piles that hushed the steps of anyone approaching.

Theo was a curious child, with bright hazel eyes that saw wonder in every nook and cranny of the woods. He loved to explore, to poke under logs and listen to the gurgle of the brook nearby. On this particular afternoon, the wind carried a whisper through the trees, a rustle that seemed almost like a song. Theo followed it, his boots crunching and his breath fogging in the chill. The sound led him to the cave’s mouth, where the earthy scent of damp soil and fallen leaves greeted him like an old friend.

He ducked under the willow vines, brushing aside golden strands. Inside, the cave was dim and cool, glowing faintly orange from the sunlight filtering through cracks above. And what Theo saw next made his heart flutter with excitement. Thick roots, twisted and strong, hung from the ceiling and curled across the floor, some even weaving together to make cozy little nooks. The walls were covered in soft moss and tiny mushrooms that seemed to nod in welcome.

As Theo wandered deeper, he heard a soft murmuring. At first, he thought it was just the wind outside. But as he listened, he realized the voices were coming from the roots themselves. He knelt down and pressed his ear gently to a broad, knobby root. The whispers grew clearer, swirling around him like gentle autumn breezes.

“Hello?” Theo whispered back, unsure if he was dreaming.

“Welcome, Theo,” the roots replied in voices as old as the soil, warm and crackling like a campfire. “You’ve found our secret home. We remember your footsteps from above. Will you listen to our story?”

Theo nodded, feeling a shiver of delight. “What story?” he asked, settling cross-legged on a soft patch of moss.

The roots began to sway, and their whispers grew into a song of secrets. “We cradle a creature within our arms, a being older than the oldest oak, gentler than the gentlest breeze. Would you like to meet our friend?”

“Oh yes, please!” said Theo, his eyes shining.

“Then listen well, and know the secrets of earth and root,” the whispers chimed.

They told Theo that deep within the cave, nestled in a hollow wrapped tightly by their roots, slept a creature named Miren. Miren was neither animal nor plant, but something in between. Her back was covered in velvety moss, her arms were shaped like slender branches, and her hair was made of golden autumn leaves that rustled even when she was still. The roots explained that Miren was the guardian of the woods, tending the soil and comforting the trees as they settled in for winter’s sleep.

“But Miren is shy,” said the deepest, oldest root, whose bark was silvered with age. “She only wakes for those with gentle hearts who listen to the whispers of the forest.”

Theo felt his chest swell with hope. “Can I see her?” he asked, peering into the shadows.

“Go softly,” the roots urged, parting gently to form a little tunnel deeper into the cave.

Theo crawled carefully, his fingers brushing against the cool, moist earth. The roots glowed with a faint golden light, guiding him safe and sure. At the end of the tunnel, he reached a small chamber. It was round and cozy, lined with curled roots and soft leaves. In the very center was a mound of moss, rising and falling with the slow rhythm of gentle breathing.

Miren lay curled atop the moss, her arms wrapped around her knees. Her leaf-hair glimmered in the dim light, and her skin looked as soft as the petals of wildflowers. Even as she slept, tiny woodland creatures nestled close to her: a shivering field mouse, a snoozing beetle, and a fuzzy caterpillar, all safe within her care.

Theo sat quietly, not daring to make a sound. He watched as Miren’s chest rose and fell, and he felt a deep peace settle over him. The roots wrapped gently around Theo, making him feel warm and welcome.

After a little while, Miren stirred. Her leaf-hair shimmered and her eyes fluttered open. They were the color of deep forest pools, calm and knowing.

“Hello, Theo,” Miren said, her voice soft as fallen leaves.

Theo bowed his head shyly. “The roots told me about you.”

Miren smiled, her face gentle and kind. “The roots always know when someone is ready to listen. They carry stories from tree to tree and from stone to stone. Would you like to hear one?”

Theo nodded eagerly, curling up beside Miren on the moss. Miren placed her branch-like hand over his, and the roots hummed all around them, weaving a tale.

They spoke of ancient days, when the forest was wild and untamed, and Miren first awoke from the heart of a seed. She had wandered the woods, healing broken branches, helping the wind spread seeds, and soothing frightened animals during storms. The roots told Theo how Miren’s presence made the earth rich and soft, and her laughter brought blossoms even in the coldest months.

As the story spun on, Miren guided Theo’s hand to the rich earth. “Do you feel it?” she asked. “The heartbeat of the forest, the secret songs beneath your fingertips?”

Theo closed his eyes and felt a gentle thrum. It was as if the ground itself was alive, singing a lullaby to everything that lived above and below.

“The roots keep the secrets of all living things,” Miren whispered. “They remember every step, every sigh, every wish. And tonight, they have shared their greatest secret with you.”

Theo felt honored, as if he’d been entrusted with a precious gift. He promised to keep the secret safe, never to disturb the cave nor speak of Miren to those who would not listen.

After a time, Miren’s eyes grew heavy again, and she settled back into the nest of moss and leaves. “Sleep well, Theo,” she said. “May you always listen to the whispers of roots and remember the heart of the earth.”

The roots wrapped around Theo, cradling him softly. He felt himself drifting to sleep, his dreams filled with golden leaves and gentle, whispering voices.

When he finally awoke, the cave was bathed in early morning light. The tunnel had vanished, and Miren was nowhere to be seen. Theo crawled out past the willow vines, the sunlight warming his face. He glanced back at the cave, now just an ordinary hollow in the earth, but he could still feel the gentle song of the roots in his heart.

From that day on, Theo wandered the woods with new respect, stepping lightly, listening closely. Whenever he heard the rustle of roots or the hush of wind through autumn leaves, he smiled, knowing the secret world beneath his feet. And when he grew tired at night, he would remember the warmth of Miren’s mossy nest, the gentle hum of the roots, and the secret promise he had made inside the earthy autumn cave.
